Testing a Mail Server


Sometimes it’s necessary to do a basic test of an SMTP server. These are the commands that you can use to do this.

  1. Go to a command prompt.
  2. Type Telnet IPADDRESS 25 and press enter.
    • IPADDRESS is the address of the SMTP server to test.
    • You should receive a 220 if successful.
  3. Type EHLO DOMAIN.COM and press enter.
    • DOMAIN.COM is the domain to work in.
    • You should receive a 250 if successful.
  4. Type MAIL FROM:EMAIL@DOMAIN.COM and press enter.
    • EMAIL@DOMAIN.COM is the email address to send from.
    • You should receive a 250 if successful.
  5. Type RCPT TO:EMAIL@DOMAIN.COM and press enter.
    • EMAIL@DOMAIN.COM is the email address to send to.
    • You should receive a 250 if successful.
  6. Type DATA and press enter.
    • You should receive a 354 if successful.
  7. Type Subject: SUBJECT LINE and press enter.
    • You will not receive a reply to this command.
  8. Type the body of the message and press enter twice when done.
    • You will not receive a reply to this command.
  9. Type . (period) and press enter to send message.
    • You should receive a 250 if successful.
  10. Type quit and press enter to exit telnet session.
